Home on the Plains

home-on-the-plains-wm

Still enthralled with buffaloes!  With this one I was thinking about how everyone thinks of the plains of Kansas as a bit drab, when actually it is teaming with all kinds of beautiful life. As a child I remember being in a field of huge sunflowers that towered high over my head and became the inspiration for the giant sunflowers in this piece.

“Home on the Plains” is on a 16 x 20 inch cradled wood panel.

How Now Brown Cow?

How Now Brown Cow wm.jpg

The latest in my Home on the Range series celebrating Kansas.  Of course it has to be titled “How Now Brown Cow”!  This particular piece is a tribute to the Kansas farm.

On a 12 x 12 stretched canvas with 1 1/2 inch deep sides. Created with Citra Solv altered National Geographic pages and acrylic paint.

Paper Love

I had few paper themed workshops last week at Tessera Gallery.  The first was painting with paper, where we created a piece of artwork using only paper in the place of brush strokes.

I think the results were lovely!

Next up was a mosaics workshop where again we used only paper, but this time to create mosaic style works with spaces in between the papers.

Again, I was impressed with the results, even though most did not get their piece quite finished….

And finally, we finished the trio with a Story Collage workshop.

Again, everyone did a great job with some creative ideas!

A big thanks to these talented and fun ladies!

Mixed Media Challenge

challenge pack.jpg

Every couple of months at Tessera Fine Art Gallery in Wichita is a Mixed Media Challenge.  You purchase a pack of goodies for $10 and that enters you in a challenge to create a small piece of art using at least 5 of the items from the bag.  Your piece, along with the others will then hang on a featured artist wall in the gallery starting with Final Friday Art Crawl (this time March 31) and staying for two months until time to hang the next show.  It is an awesome chance to have your work hang in a gallery, as well as urge you out of the creative duldrums!

You don’t even have to live in Wichita to participate!  Simply call the gallery at (316) 262-2435 to order your pack, then send your finished piece by March 21.  It is a great value for just the pack alone!

The theme for the March pack is Go Bohemian, and it is now available.  Here are some of the goodies in the 8.5 x 11 inch package.

It includes:

  • a few sheets of paper
  • a chunk of fun fringe
  • a two part feather stencil and mask
  • handmade paper
  • 14 inches of boho style trim
  • images from a tribal book
  • hand painted paper
  • 3 boho color paper circles
  • fabric, trim, and a purple feather!
  • and of course an elephant image!

It is so fun to see what everyone comes up with!

Paper Mosaic Trees

woodland-mosaic-wm

I began this piece as an abstract pattern on this 10 x 10 inch cradled wood panel, but before I knew it trees had taken root!

I used a variety of fun papers from my stash, snipping and piecing until this abstract sort of landscape had taken shape.

Still in the collaging mood, I made a mosaic spread in my full size art journal as well.

It’s a new month and time for a new Mixed Media Art Parts!  For those of you who have subscribed to this monthly packet of fun, don’t worry, yours is on its way to you!

The theme this month is INDUSTRIAL/STEAMPUNK.  I have been excited about this pack and gathering goodies for quite awhile.  I have taken photos of interesting manholes and industrial patterns and printed them off for you.  I have lots of vintage illustrations of engines, electronics, equipment, and building plans, and pages from a photo essay of NYC after 9/11.

I used some of these fun papers from my pack to make the skyscrapers on this mosaic art journal page.

I found a super cool napkin that peeled into layers makes a wonderful decoupage accent.

I have added vintage computer keyboard keys and some other fun dimensional hardware: a washer, a V ring, and a zippper.

Here are some ideas of what others have done with some of the dimensional treasures:

How cute is this washer jewelry by scarletrevolution on etsy ?

And if you want to make your own, here are instructions from goinovertheedge.

And so many steampunk possibilities for radio tubes! Like this cute necklace by Momento Inspiracao

Or, these adorable robots by Fobots !

And I can’t leave out the vintage computer keys that can be turned into cute as can be push pins or magnets like these posted on postris.
